  • NYT reporter clearly needs a new thesaurus: "Researchers at Cornell, using powerful computers and clever algorithms, studied the news cycle by looking for repeated phrases and tracking their appearances on 1.6 million mainstream media sites and blogs." I just LOVE that "powerful computers and clever algorithms".

But it's also interesting to look at what this really tracks and adds to in terms of our understanding of the news cycle – it's looking at memes that gain and lose popularity in news coverage. In terms of informing journalism or better coverage, it's not telling us a whole lot, but it may help provide a little check on how quickly news organisations "RT" things that other orgs see as "newsworthy".
